Many people prefer home remedies for acne rather than over-the-counter medications or those available by prescription (including their possibly harmful side effects).
- Drinking plenty of water can help clear up your acne, it’s a great place to start when looking for a home remedy.
- Take fresh fenugreek (methi) leaves and make a paste with them. Apply the paste on your face and leave it on overnight. It is know to help prevent whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, and dryness.
- Mix lemon juice with rose water in equal portions and apply the mix on the acne-affected area. Leave on for 30 minutes and rinse off thoroughly.
- Apply fresh mint juice to the affected area and leave on overnight. This remedy is known to treat acne as well as other skin conditions including: eczema, scabies and insect stings.
- Ground radish seeds into a paste, mix with water and apply on the affected areas of the face to remove blackheads.
- Apply ripe tomato pulp on your face including the areas that are not affected by acne. Leave on for one hour, rinse with warm water and pat dry. The tomato fruit possesses high levels of vitamins A and C, antioxidants and acidic content. These are especially useful for treating acne at home.
- 1 tsp. Groundnut oil mixed with an equal amount of lime juice (citric acid is an effective astringent and antioxidant) to prevent formation of blackheads, pimples etc (lime juice will break down the groundnut oil into amino acids so your skin doesn’t absorb the oil).
- Create a paste using 3 tablespoons of honey (natural antibacterial) and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder (antioxidant and antimicrobial properties). Apply this paste to your pimples before going to bed and wash it the next morning using tepid water. Continue daily for two weeks and your pimples should disappear.
- Cinnamon mixed with milk is another home remedy. Simply add 1 tablespoon of cinnamon to a 1/4 cup of milk and applied to the affected areas.
- Grind sesame seeds and mustart seeds into a paste using a small amount of water. Apply only to the acne-affected area
and leave on for 15 minutes and rinse with warm water. Adding tumeric powder (another natural anti-bacterial) can also speed the healing process. Sesame and mustard seeds are rich in zinc and topical application can speed the healing of acne lesions. - Raw garlic (a natural antibiotic and ant-oxidant) applied to the face can make persistent pimples and acne disappear with repeated applications. To use, extract 2 cloves of fresh garlic from a bulb and peel them. Then crush them to extract their juice. Apply to your face, including areas that don’t have any acne (to prevent future breakouts). Leave on for only 5 minutes and rinse off with warm water. Never leave pure garlic juice on overnight as it can cause burning. Adding an equal amount of vinegar to the garlic and help to balance your skin’s pH level.
- Grind an orange peel together with a small amount of water into a paste and apply it on and around your acne, this home remedy for acne has been around for many years.
- Toothpaste has been known to dry out pimples. Simply apply a dab of toothpaste over the entire acne-affected area and allow to dry over at least 2 hours. You can also choose to leave it on overnight. Rinse with mild soap and warm water. Mint paste works best, avoid gels and toothpaste formulated with tartar control.
- Witch Hazel is a liquid astringent and can be applied with a cloth or cotton ball over the entire face once or twice a day. If you have acne on another area of your body ie. shoulders or back it is probably best to test witch hazel there first since your face is more sensitive.
- Cucumber juice is known to calm and cool acne flare-ups. After removing the skin of the cucumber (often waxed and treated with chemicals) thinly slice it and soak in a carafe of water for at least an hour. This will allow the nutrients, such as vitamin A, potassium and chlorophyll to be absorbed into the water. You can also drink this juice as well as apply as a face wash.
- Oily skin can be treated with an oatmeal mask. Oatmeal not only acts as a great scrub but also effectively soaks away excess oils. Using this home remedy for acne you’ll want to rinse with cold water after the mask, doing so will help in contracting your pores.
